    The Hydra-matic 6T30/40/45/50 (6 Speed) is a fully automatic, six speed, front wheel drive, electronically controlled transmission that features clutch to clutch shifting. It is also all-wheel drive capable. It was first introduced in the 2007 Chevy Captiva followed by the Malibu in 2008 and quickly spread to the compact, mid-size, small crossover vehicle line, as shown in Figure 1. The 6T40 is also found in hybrid applications. At the start of production for the 2012 model year Generation 2 was introduced which is currently used in all platforms using the 6T family of transmissions. This series of transmissions is also known as the GF6. It consists primarily of a four element torque converter, three planetary gear sets, five clutch packs, one mechanical one-way clutch and a hydraulic pressurization and control system. Three planetary gear sets provide the six forward gear ratios and reverse. Changing gear ratios is fully automatic and is accomplished through the use of a Transmission Control Module (TCM), that is located within the transmission. The TCM receives and monitors various electronic sensor inputs, and uses this information to shift the transmission at the optimum time. The TCM commands shift solenoids and Clutch Pressure Control (CPC) solenoids within the transmission to control shift timing. The TCM controls shift feel through the CPC solenoids. The TCM also controls the apply and release of the torque converter clutch which allows the engine to deliver the maximum fuel efficiency without sacrificing vehicle performance. This manual contains the procedures necessary to diagnose, overhaul and/or repair the 6T30/40/45/50 (6 Speed) GEN 1 and GEN 2 transmissions from General Motors and is for use by professional technicians.     The AF23/33-5 is a fully-automatic, five speed, electrically controlled, front-wheel drive transmission. This transmission is currently used by many different vehicle manufacturers, among them are; GM, Infiniti, Nissan, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, and Volvo. In the GM, Saturn and Suzuki vehicles, the transmission is known as the AF23/33-5. In Saab vehicles it’s designated FA 57. Nissan and Infiniti call it the RE5F22A, and in a Volvo it’s known as the AW55-50/51SN. This transmission contains three planetary gear sets, three driving friction elements, five holding friction elements (one of which is a servo applied band), two sprags, and a torque converter, which contains a clutch assembly for increased fuel efficiency. The three planetary gear sets provide five forward speeds and one reverse speed. Gear ratio change is fully automatic and controlled through the Transmission Control Module (TCM).     The 46RE, 47RE and 48RE family of transmissions by the Chrysler Group, are fitted behind a wide variety of engine sizes, including diesel, and across various vehicle lines. They are also available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. Beginning at the start of production for model year 2005, Dodge trucks equipped with the 5.9L diesel and 48RE transmission were equipped with an electronically controlled Transmission Throttle Valve Actuator (TTVA). This Actuator has replaced the previous Throttle Valve Cable and all associated linkage. A push-in Transmission Range Sensor was implemented in model year 2002 to replace the screw-in Park/Neutral switch.
    The 46RE, 47RE and 48RE transmissions are all four speed fully automatic units with an electronic governor. They are equipped with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. First through third gear ranges are provided by the clutches, bands, low-roller clutch, and planetary gearsets in the transmission. Fourth gear is provided by the overdrive unit (rear section) that contains an overdrive clutch, OD/direct clutch, overrun roller clutch, and planetary gearset. These units contain a front (direct) clutch, rear (forward) clutch, and OD/direct clutch which serve as the input driving components.
